What green transition?

The green transition will change the structures of society and the economy. The Fund helps to seize the potential of the transformation.

Green transition refers to the restructuring of the economy and the construction of a carbon-neutral welfare society by moving towards a sustainable economy and sustainable growth within the limits of the earth’s carrying capacity. This includes low-carbon solutions, as well as a circular economy and biodiversity-friendly solutions. Finland’s goal is to be one of the top countries in the green transition. The City of Porvoo’s strategy and its main objective, sustainable growth, also go hand in hand with the green transition.

In practice, green transition means, for example, new kinds of technologies to replace the old, consuming kind, new kinds of know-how and ways to operate, as well as new kinds of products and services. Measures that are brought about by the green transition may, for instance, include products and services that are produced carbon-neutrally, products and services that replace polluting solutions and practices, circular economy, water conservation and green technology.

The actions of different players and sectors will help each other to implement the green transition: the state and cities will guide and enable the green transition of businesses and consumers through their own actions, while business solutions will support each other and facilitate sustainable everyday solutions for consumers. Research and development activities, on the other hand, produce new and necessary information for everyone. Consumers also play an important role in steering demand towards more sustainable products and services.

From the point of view of companies, the green transition will mean, for example, remodelling the business structure, the consumption and purchasing habits, public regulation and their own business to make it sustainable. The business concept of many companies, new or old, will also be based entirely on promoting the green transition.
